This book is a not-so-original but well-written story about the path not trodden, very much in the spirit of the American film “It’s a Wonderful Life”, Charles Dickens’ “Christmas Carol, or even MARVEL’s “What if” series. As in all these works, there is a host, the librarian, in this case, that shows the main character all the alternative realities each decision leads to. Although the idea is old and the end predictable, the book is quite engaging and a good adaptation of this “What if” idea to modern times, without some of the religious Jimbo Jambo of some previous versions. Actually, I think the alternative to a deity given in this version is what I enjoyed the most. But you can see that it wants to be a modern book not just in that distancing from the Christian tradition, but also in the fact that there are a couple of gay characters, a constant mention of social media and a bunch of global locations. It is a very optimistic book in general, but the author goes a bit over the top, giving the main character genes that would allow her to be amid the world’s elite in any discipline she could have chosen.
